Telefonica de Espana S.A.U ("Telefonica") of Spain and
Lucent Technologies announced that Telefonica has added its 40,000th IPTV subscriber to Telefonica's "Imagenio" multimedia broadband service in Spain. "Imagenio" is designed to deliver digital-quality broadcast multimedia services into the home over a broadband connection, also serving as the platform for Telefonica's future multimedia service offerings.
Lucent and Telefonica have already deployed more than 100,000 IPTV ports of Lucent's Stinger DSL broadband access concentrator. Lucent's ports are video ready and currently serve more than 40 broadcast video channels that offer the most popular audio and video channels, data services and digital-quality video-on-demand services that "Imagenio" currently offers.
Lucent's IP Video Solution enables service providers to deliver a triple play bundle of Voice, Video and Data services to their subscribers on a mass-market scale. Central to Lucent's IP video solution is the Stinger(r) DSL platform, the industry's first high performance IP-enabled DSLAM with advanced Layer 3 IP features that support robust, reliable delivery of IPTV in a wide variety of deployment scenarios and network architectures. With multi-gigabit Ethernet enhancements and high port density, it enables service providers to manage more subscribers in less space while leveraging their embedded ATM infrastructure to cost-effectively provide IP services, including video. This, coupled with Riverstone's reliable Carrier Ethernet routing technology, provides carriers with a highly efficient and cost effective network, allowing service providers to compete more effectively.
Lucent has already installed Stinger access concentrators in more than 25 countries. The Stinger DSL platform supports the "triple-play" of DSL services, combining data, video and voice, enabling service providers to offer revenue generating services to their subscribers. The Lucent Stinger platform is built to handle the requirements of next-generation, high-performance services over DSL, and provides enhanced IP and ATM performance, offering the bandwidth needed to support increased subscriber densities.
