Discovery Networks has joined
Akimbo Systems' growing list of mainstream and niche content providers for Akimbo's Internet-delivered video-on-demand service for television. Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Travel Channel, Discovery Health Channel, Military Channel and Discovery Kids Channel will now be available on-demand alongside video blogs and hard-to-find programming on everything from Chinese programming to home repair.
Akimbo offers more than 4,000 programs and on average adds 250 programs a week. Couch commandos can download programs such as Discovery Channel’s "MythBusters," Animal Planet's "Corwin’s Quest," or kids' favorites "HI-5" or "Darcy's Wild Life" from Discovery Kids Channel – all through a single service.
Emerging as the only all-in-one provider of nearly unlimited content, the Akimbo Service lets subscribers with a broadband Internet connection select programs for download to the Akimbo Player, or later this fall, to a Microsoft Media Center, for viewing on their televisions. Programs can also be chosen by remote control for download to the Akimbo Player, which stores up to 150 hours of video and has viewing controls such as pause, rewind and archive.
Offering programming from more than 125 distinctive providers and over 50 categories of specialty video content, Akimbo is a complement to existing broadcast, cable and satellite services – bridging the gap between broadcast and broadband. Akimbo is constantly searching for new content partners and updating its growing video collection to ensure a wide-ranging and ever-changing selection of programs. Akimbo's library of on-demand video also includes well-known names like A&E, BBC and Major League Baseball, as well as hard-to-find specialty offerings like AsiaMovieChannel.com and LetGo! Yoga. Other content providers include The Cartoon Network, CNN and National Geographic.
The Akimbo Player and remote control are $199.99 and the Akimbo Service is $9.99 a month with the first three months free at
