Irdeto announced that it has implemented its IPTV content security solution for CUTV!, Cornell University's campus television service, delivered across the university's broadband IP network to Cornell's residence halls. Subscribers may access the service on their Windows-based PCs or view from their TV sets by connecting to a set top box (STB).
CUTV! offers 50 channels of news and entertainment programming. The Ivy League university decided to implement an end-to-end live digital TV over Ethernet solution rather than traditional cable TV, since IPTV presented an attractive alternative means to distribute video content securely and efficiently compared to the traditional cable TV approach.
Using the Irdeto IPTV security solution, the programming is securely stored and distributed across its Ethernet IP network, and the corresponding content rights are managed on an individual subscriber and/or device basis. The Irdeto system supports end-to-end IPTV security, from pre-encrypted content storage on video servers, to secure transmission to client devices and scrambled storage on PVR/DVRs.
"A major consideration when planning the rollout of CUTV! was the security of the content and its potential vulnerability to piracy," said Kevin Feeney, a senior information technology engineer for Cornell University's Network & Communication Services. "We wanted a solution in place that would safeguard our revenues, and satisfy the rights holders' needs for content security. We were impressed by Irdeto's long track record, adherence to open standards, extensive customer list and continuous product innovation."
"Irdeto continues to offer content security solutions for a myriad of applications, including educational institutions like Cornell University," said Parvaiz Ahsan, vice president of sales at Irdeto. "We are pleased that this prestigious institution has recognized the value of Irdeto's solution and look forward to supporting the university in offering this unique entertainment and education service to Cornell University students, faculty and staff."
Irdeto will be exhibiting at Telecom '05, booth #1415, Venetian Convention Center, Las Vegas, October 24-26, 2005.
