Tellabs
announced Multiple Dwelling Unit (MDU) support for its Tellabs 1600 Series
Optical Network Terminal (ONT) product line. This capability enables service
providers to leverage existing wiring in multi-dwelling buildings, such as
apartment complexes or university residence halls, in Fiber-to-the-Premises
(FTTP) deployments.
Tellabs' MDU portfolio can be deployed using very-high-data-rate digital
subscriber line (VDSL) over existing copper wiring, or Ethernet cabling in
newer construction, while leveraging coaxial cable for video as required.
Previously, coping with a diverse blend of infrastructure and negotiating
permission from property owners to install fiber in individual units were
significant obstacles for broadband service delivery to these locations.
According to industry estimates, MDUs account for up to 25% of the
addressable market for residential and small business broadband services in
large cities. Market research firm In-Stat predicts that U.S. MDU in-building
broadband subscribers will double from 5 million in 2004 to 10 million in
2009. Tellabs is the market leader in supplying fiber-based access solutions
in North America, with more than 1 million lines in service.
"This product further demonstrates Tellabs' leadership in fiber-based
access solutions and enables our customers to extend the reach of FTTP-based
services," said Carl DeWilde, executive vice president, broadband products,
for Tellabs. "Tellabs' continued technology enhancements exemplify a
commitment to advancing our customers' networks to better meet evolving end-
user needs."
The new Tellabs ONTs are Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) ready, enabling
easy migration to support Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) when the service
provider is ready to implement the transition. Video services can be delivered
via radio frequency video overlay or Internet Protocol Television (IPTV).
Tellabs also provides optional element management systems that remotely manage
operational, administrative, maintenance and provisioning functions to further
reduce expenses.
General availability of the Tellabs 621 MDU ONT and the Tellabs 625
MDU ONT is scheduled for first-quarter 2006. The Tellabs 1600 series is a
part of the Tellabs DynamicHome solution, an end-to-end solution that
delivers reliable video, voice and data services.
