PCCW mobile announced that it will offer a free Mobile TV trial for its 110,000 users starting from June 30. The initial Mobile TV channels to be available throughout the territory are now TV's Business News Channel and the 24-hour ATV News Channel.
The service is a significant innovation that uses Cell Multimedia Broadcast technology. It allows continuous broadcast feeds of TV programming over a 3G mobile network and is able to support large numbers of concurrent users. The service is easy to use, with one-click access on the mobile handset.
To allow more time for 3G trial users to experience this breakthrough broadcast technology and to provide PCCW mobile with their feedback, the 3G trial period will be extended to August 31, 2006 for trial users who joined the "3G Trial" on or before February 28, 2006.
PCCW mobile has received some very positive and encouraging feedback and usage data on the 3G Trial program that reaffirmed PCCW mobile's belief that the market is ready for advanced multi-media services on 3G. For example:
- Top three most frequently visited PCCW channels: now TV, TVB and news
- Over 90% of trial users have used data services
- Average data usage of each trial user is 9MB per month, which is over 20 times that of an average 2G user
"This 3G trial program is unprecedented in scale and we are very encouraged by the response of our trial users. For this, we sincerely thank our customers for their valuable feedback. We are offering the Mobile TV trial for our users so that we can continue to optimize our network and service performance as well as our product and content offerings." said Tom Chan, Managing Director, Consumer Group, PCCW.
