Research and Markets has announced the addition of Evaluating IPTV Vendors Strategies: From End-to-End System to Component Approach to their offering.
Our initial report "IPTV: Business Case Analysis & Forecast" published this past January 2005 set the backdrop, context, technologies and market development forces at play for the worldwide IPTV market. This report is the second in a series of four quarterly reports intended to both update clients of short-term trends in IPTV, as well as address specific additional issues.
In this report, we address two key sets of topics:
1. The technology and systems landscape necessary for the IPTV marketplace to flourish; an examination of how some of the key (incumbent or new) vendors are addressing their supply strategy; and suggestions on how to successful integration and vendor sourcing strategies that should be followed by deploying Service Operators; and
2. Updated metrics on known market deployment numbers, and market share information for the following sub-segments of the IPTV market: chipsets, set top boxes, security (Conditional Access Systems or Digital Rights Management), and middleware.
The report analyzes and highlights the key IPTV end to end system components needed for a successful deployment. Drawing on this backdrop, we demonstrate how three main sets of vendors strategies and offerings have emerged in this nascent IPTV market:
- Microsoft, with an IPTV offering which covers and encompasses the widest range of systems subcomponents
- At the other end of the analysis landscape, some vendors which solely focus on one set of components, in a well defined environment of interfaces
- And some vendors which offer multiple products offering with components interfaces and APIs
The market forecast focuses on the market share of key leading vendors in the Set Top Box and chipset segments. Creation of this report involved surveys of over 100 Operators, Set Top Box and Chip manufacturers in Europe, Asia, and the United States.
Topics Include:
1.0 Introduction
2.0 Deconstructing the System
3.0 Complete End-to-End IPTV Systems
4.0 Component Vendors
5.0 A Bit of Both
6.0 Successful Integration Strategies
7.0 Market SpotlightTM - IPTV Subscribers, STB and Chipset vendors
8.0 Conclusion

List of Figures
The IPTV forecast methodology for the Q1 2005 report was based on an assessment of
(i) broadband and digital PayTV penetration numbers collected for 28 television markets and countries worldwide
(ii) penetration percentages of known IPTV TelcoTV deployments
(iii) and the many lessons of digital PayTV including diffusion, integration, and volume deployment ramps for the digital cable and satellite worlds.
Based on these three main sources of information, the author built forecast models for IPTV deployments and subscriptions taking into account (i) business variables and the economics impacting set-top box (STB) cost and volume ramp, (ii) broadcast vs. on-demand architectures, and (iii) the availability and maturity of high compression codecs.
In summary, the authors forecast for TelcoTV deployments is the most conservative and realistic available from any research vendor. That said, they remain bullish about hybrid deployments - that is, broadcast or cable deployments using IPTV to (i) cost reduce or (ii) extend the reach of their on-demand offerings.
With the stage now set for the IPTV industry to develop, the author will continue to update and build forecast and market share data based on actual deployments. Creation of this report involved surveys of over 100 Operators, Set Top Box and Chip manufacturers in Europe, Asia, and the United States.
