Uniersal Music Group has opened up a lawsuit against Grouper Networks Inc. and Bolt Inc., both popular online video sharing sites. The lawsuit alleges widespread infringement for allowing users to post hundreds of music videos from popular artists and other copyrighted material without authorization.
Universal Music recently reached a content licensing agreemnt with YouTube, but other sites have not followed suit. According to Universal, the sites have not taken enough action, coining their efforts up until this point as "token, ineffective." The company said discussions have occured with both Grouper and Bolt, but an agreement was never reached with either.
Universal Music stated that Sony Pictures might be added as a defendent since Sony Pictures Entertainment recently acquired Grouper for $65 million in August.
The company is asking for an unspecified amount due to damages from any profits made by the site or $150,000 per copyright work that was posted on the site without permission.
