TELUS has signed a six-year agreement to apply
Widevine Technologies's video content protection technology across a number of platforms.
TELUS offers a range of video products including downloadable multimedia content, cellular-based TELUS mobile TV and TELUS TV, an IPTV broadcast and video-on-demand service. Widevine will secure the delivery and consumption of content via set top boxes and PCs used by TELUS customers accessing these services. TELUS will also assess using the technology in its wireless devices such as cell phones.
Widevine Cypher provides companies a single content security platform protecting mobile, IPTV and broadband content delivery to a wide range of consumer electronics devices. Widevine's Digital Copy Protection solution will protect PCs and PC-based platforms that TELUS customers use to receive and distribute content between authorized devices in the home — and on the road.
"Widevine is an industry leader in the protection of downloadable content," said Ibrahim Gedeon, TELUS' Chief Technology Officer. "Managing security of multimedia content is essential. Widevine has proven it can provide the protection we need along with the scalability to support our growth."
"TELUS is a customer with impressive long term video delivery plans," said Brian Baker, President and CEO of Widevine. "Widevine is excited to continue our joint work to secure premium content delivered across all of TELUS' video delivery services for the range of services its customers are asking for."
According to Michael Wolf, Director of Digital Home Research at ABI, "Today's carriers want to provide consumers content across three screens. To do so, they must protect the distribution to multiple consumer platforms. Widevine's agreement with TELUS to secure multimedia content distribution across Internet, IPTV and mobile is another validation of Widevine's strength in providing this level of comprehensive content security."
