Portugal Telecom's wireline business, PT Comunicações, provided the first public presentation of their IPTV project at a press conference today. Rodrigo Costa, president of PT Comunicações, said PT will begin to pilot IPTV in June of 2007. Costa said the company's IPTV initiative is one of the most important projects in the next few years for the telecom.
The trial will include around 5,000 users in the areas of Lisbon, Porto, and Castelo Branco. The service will initially launch with around 100 channels and include DVR and VOD functionality. Through the commercial pilot, the company intends to evaluate the processes and systems to support the operation and to make the necessary changes for the launch of the service.
PT has yet to release pricing information on the IPTV service.
Luis Lopes, administrator of the PTC, and António Geirinhas, responsible for the IPTV project, presented the real time demonstration of the service using the platform installed in Picoas and Monsanto.
