SK Telecom plans to launch a VOD TV service that can be used through any Internet operator. SK Telecom will soon start the service with Samsung Electronics to provide set-top boxes. The move comes as three local Internet operators -- Hanarotelecom, KT Corp. and LG Dacom -- step up efforts to capitalize on a burgeoning Internet-based TV business under which their subscribers can view dramas, movies and other multimedia content through high-speed Internet connections.
The existing services are available only for customers who subscribe to one of the three operators. But SK Telecom said that its new "TV portal" can be used through the Internet connection of any carrier.
As SK Telecom recently signed a contract to purchase Hanarotelecom, the company said that it will be able to provide two different Internet-based TV services. Hanarotelecom runs its VOD-based "Hana TV" and the takeover deal currently awaits government approval.
