Asia-Pacific accounted for about a third of the global IPTV subscriber base last year with over four million IPTV subscribers (as of end-2007). With only eight Asia-Pacific nations presently having commercial IPTV services and many more service providers in trials for expected deployments from 2009 onwards, the IPTV revolution is expected to hit Asia. Even so, operators are still grappling with finding a profitable business model for IPTV offerings.
Frost & Sullivan research analyst Adeel Najam believes that IPTV service is a must for operators with broadband speeds upwards of 10Mbps in order to fully optimize bandwidth capacity, and to realistically transform into multi-play service providers offering voice, data and video services. "The approach, however, is not all plain vanilla," Najam says.
"The broadcasting industry is uncharted territory for telecom service providers. To succeed, telcos will need to beat the traditional pay-TV operators at their own game," he explains. "IPTV players need to adopt an aggressive strategy in building the right network and acquiring the right content."
Najam will share his views on the current market landscape and the future prospects of IPTV at an analyst briefing to be held on Wednesday, December 3, 2008, 11:00am (Singapore time). Strategies for IPTV deployment will also be discussed.
This briefing is a must-attend for those eyeing to grow with this new technology. Service providers interested in IPTV investments and vendors keen on identifying markets with the greatest potential for IPTV will find this briefing especially beneficial.
