Chinese wireline operator Shanghai Telecom Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Media Group (SMG) will be collaborating with Siemens Communications in connection with the commercial introduction of its Home Entertainment solution, the two companies announced today at a press conference in Shanghai (China). The solution has been in successful test operation since mid August. Amid all the industry talk about future IPTV services, Verizon FiOS TV customers are already using Internet protocol technology every time they order on-demand movies or navigate the service's interactive programming guide.

Internet protocol TV uses the same rules or protocols to deliver video that the Internet uses to transmit data. Verizon's IP-based video-on-demand service is powered by the SeaChange IP Video System, the most widely used media platform for on-demand television, with capabilities to support interactive advertising, games-on-demand and other new applications. Verizon is also using conventional broadcast technology to deliver scheduled programming for its fiber-optic FiOS TV service.

Thomson announced an agreement to acquire the Thales Broadcast & Multimedia (TBM) business unit. In a related announcement today, Thomson also described a strategic partnership with Thales, the parent company of TBM and a leading international electronics group.

Thomson and Thales announced a strategic partnership as well as the potential acquisition by Thomson of Thales Broadcast & Multimedia (TBM).

Thomson and Thales will develop a partnership relationship specifically in the domain of high-value video content management and distribution solutions for in-flight entertainment, security, and defense applications, leveraging their respective skills and expertise in these domains.
