The Long Island village of Laurel Hollow is bringing its residents a major step closer to choice for their cable television services, thanks to the Village Board of Trustees' unanimous vote last night (June 22) to award a video franchise to Verizon for its FiOS TV service.

The Oldsmar City Council Tuesday night (June 20) voted for consumer choice and competition in the cable-TV market by awarding a franchise to Verizon for its FiOS TV product, to be delivered via its new, all-fiber network.

More than 56,000 potential viewers in the Massachusetts communities of Burlington, Winchester and North Reading are a major step closer to having more choice for their cable television services.

The California Assembly late Wednesday overwhelmingly approved Bill 2987, which would overhaul the state's outdated cable franchising process and pave the way for new competitors such as Verizon to offer consumers a choice in video programming, better technology and lower prices. The long wait will soon be over for Tewksbury residents eager for cable-TV competition, thanks to a unanimous Board of Selectmen vote Tuesday night (May 30) authorizing Verizon to offer its fiber-optic-powered FiOS TV in the town.

With its more than 27,000 potential viewers, Tewksbury joins a growing number of Massachusetts communities granting Verizon cable franchises. The company offers FiOS TV in Woburn, Reading and Lynnfield, Mass., as well as other locations in New York, California, Texas, Florida, Maryland and Virginia. Last week, Verizon also was granted franchises in Wakefield, Hamilton and Wenham, Mass.

New England Cable News, the country's largest regional news network, joins the Verizon FiOS TV lineup today. Verizon and NECN have agreed that NECN will be carried on Verizon FiOS TV in New England markets.

NECN will be available to subscribers of FiOS TV Premier, Verizon's most popular package, on Channel 82. NECN initially will be available in Woburn, Reading and Lynnfield, Mass., where Verizon offers FiOS TV service. Verizon will also carry the channel in future New England markets as it obtains cable franchises and launches service. Last night (May 30), Verizon was awarded a video franchise in Tewksbury, Mass., and it received franchises in Wakefield, Hamilton and Wenham, Mass., last week.
