Simple.TV released today their new DVR ($149) with high-definition TV tuner that converts broadcast television into streaming MPEG-4 for connected devices. Bringing live and recorded TV to connected devices both inside and outside the home, Simple.TV turns the iPad, Roku box, Google TV, Boxee Box, or any web browser into a full-featured DVR that is accessible anywhere. BBC Worldwide has released their new global BBC iPlayer iPad app, which allows video on demand subscribers to stream and to download shows for offline viewing for when they can’t access Wi-Fi connectivity. The new subscription service, launching first in Western Europe, delivers programming to viewers in 11 markets. The global version of the BBC iPlayer app launched today is the start of a pilot phase for the service.

Time Warner Cable is launching an iPad application that plays live TV, becoming the first cable company to do so. The app will be free to download on Tuesday morning, but it will only work for people who subscribe to both video and Internet service from the New York-based cable company. Even then, it only works in the home, when the iPad is connected to the company's cable modem via a Wi-Fi router.

Rob Marcus, the company's chief operating officer and president, said the app will play 30 basic cable channels in high definition to start, but that number should expand soon.

"For all intents and purposes ... this enables you to convert any room in a house into a TV room," Marcus said.
