The battle between Blu-ray and HD-DVD might have reached its tipping point according to Forrester Research. Reuters is reporting that Forrester Research announced that Blu-Ray, the new DVD format proposed and backed by a group of companies called the Blu-ray Disc Association led by Sony and Philips, is the winner in a heated battle over next-generation DVD technology.

"Two groups are competing for control of high-definition DVD formats to be launched in the spring of 2006. After a long and tedious run up to launch, it is now clear to Forrester that the Sony-led Blu-ray format will win," said Forrester Research analyst Ted Schadler in a report.

Blu-ray has the capacity to store more information than a HD-DVD, 25 compared to 15 gigabytes per layer. The competing formats were created to store high-definition video.

Meanwhile, DVD Recorder World reports that Bill Gates' predicts that the battle between Blu-ray and HD-DVD doesn't count for much.

"The key issue here is that the protection scheme under Blu-ray is very anti-consumer and there's not much visibility of that," said Gates in an interview with college newspaper, the Daily Princetonian. "The inconvenience is that the [movie] studios have got too much protection at the expense of consumers and it won't work well on PCs."
