Deutsche Telekom announced today that it will form a task force to investigate an Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) offering in 2006. Deutsche Telekom visions IPTV as an inevitable expansion for the company with triple-play services gathering popularity.

“We see this [IPTV] as a great opportunity for Deutsche Telekom and our customers”, said Heilmann vom Bruch, CITO director for Deutsche Telekom. He added, “To stay competitive with the international market, this move is a necessary step for our company.”



Like the majority of Western Europe, Germany has a foundation built upon telecoms offering DSL service, so IPTV has been proven a very viable option. The UK is already offering IPTV in certain areas and studies have been performed in Sweden for future distributions. A portion of the task force’s objectives will be to investigate upgrading the company’s networks to ADSL2. The upgrade is currently viewed as necessary action for the capacity to handle video distribution.

The news comes in the wake of criticism and controversy relating to Deutsche Telekom’s policies barring third party resellers from offering internet service that is not bundled with telephone service.
