NEC Australia has announced that it has secured a major contract with Turkey’s largest telecommunications carrier, Turk Telekom (TT).

The contract will see NEC Australia provide 221,000 DSL lines to Turk Telekom’s (TT) growing broadband subscriber base. The company has already deployed almost 320,000 DSL lines to TT in the past two years.

The additional order will bring the total to 541,000 lines, making NEC the second largest DSL provider to TT.

NEC first supplied DSL technology to Turk Telekom in 2003, and looks forward to further expanding its deployment of DSL services in the region.

Mr Toshiharu Iwasa, NEC Australia’s Managing Director commented that “the Turk Telekom win is significant since it adds strength to our already impressive footprint in Turkey. Over the next few years, we expect to grow our market share in Turkey and aim to expand into new markets such as Europe and China significantly.”

This win is in addition to the recent NEC Australia announcements which reported the delivery of one million DSL ports to one of Australia’s major carriers since commencing volume supply in July 2004.

NEC Australia also announced the deployment of its unique TV over DSL solution to half a million subscribers to PCCW’s world leading now TV service in Hong Kong - the first and largest commercial video-over-DSL deployment in the world.

NEC Australia first conducted video over DSL trials in 1995 and collaborated closely with PCCW to deliver a complete Pay TV experience over broadband, a design years ahead of its time.

Recently NEC Australia also conducted an IPTV trial with TT.

The company began development work on ADSL in 1993 at NEC Australia’s global Next Generation Broadband R&D centre in Melbourne and was a pioneer in the delivery of video over DSL.

NEC Australia’s R & D Centre is continually enhancing its broadband access product portfolio to support the full range of triple play services – voice, video and data, playing an integral part in the global development of broadband technologies.

The company has also secured major broadband technology deployments to Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Russia, Singapore and Malaysia and has deployed over 10 million DSL lines globally.
