Cornell students will be able to watch Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) over their internet connections come August 20th of this year. The service, nicely named CUTV, will be available in Cornell’s residence halls.

CUTV will bring students 50 Time Warner channels of news and entertainment programming. The content can be viewed through the computer or on a television with the aid of a set-top box.

"We are one of the first and largest colleges going down the [IPTV] path," said Dave Vernon, CIT's Director of Information Technology.



Rather than wiring existing buildings that lacked cable with traditional coaxial cable, Cornell’s Campus Life began talks with cable providers that could provide the less-expensive IPTV. "The program is happening now because technology has gotten to a point where [IPTV] seemed the most reasonable access because of cost [to us]. We also wanted to make sure the program came at a good deal for students," said Kellie Page, Campus Life's Director of Business Services.
