SKY PerfecTV and EdgeStream to Trial VOD and IPTV Streaming in Japan
SKY Perfect Communications
Inc.(SKY PerfecTV), Japan's digital multi-channel broadcasting services company and
EdgeStream
, Inc announced that they have agreed to begin a three months trial to evaluate EdgeStream's 'Next Generation Video Streaming over IP Technology Platform' for VOD/IPTV in Japan. EdgeStream's disruptive technology platform shall enable for the very first time, broadband users across all networks in Japan to watch uninterrupted Broadcast quality video on demand streams over the public Internet.
"Japanese customers have been demanding a platform that allows them to get Cinema quality delivery over their broadband networks on ever increasing number of devices i.e. mobile handsets, STB/TV and PC. EdgeStream's disruptive technology bridges this high quality delivery need to all devices with its global reach and cost effective Video over IP Streaming Platform", said Mr. Uju Yamazaki Executive Officer, Business Development Group of SKY PerfecTV. "Until now, video streaming to homes over the IP network in Japan has been both technically and commercially challenging, in spite of high bandwidthlast mile connections commonly available today as a result of huge investments made to improve the infrastructure by the traditional telcos and content delivery networks", continued Mr.Yamazaki. "With EdgeStream's core Internet Congestion Tunnel Through (ICTT) technology and advanced Continuous Route Optimization Software (CROS), we will be able to provide a very dependable platform that enables for the very first time, DVD quality video on demand streams without any interruptions to all broadband users with a Quality of Service that is similar to their current private networks providers and at significantly lower costs".
"EdgeStream technology will allow SKY PerfecTV to realize its Mid Term Management Multi-Platform strategy to repurpose video content for distribution over IP to mobile handsets, personal computers and televisions. Our technology will allow SKY PerfecTV to offer the same quality of service over the ubiquitous public Internet that is currently enjoyed by their satellite TV customers. At the completion of the trial, SKY PerfecTV will be able to set up their own video streaming channels for delivery over the public Internet, thus saving huge infrastructure and operational expenses compared to setting up service over content delivery networks or private networks, without compromising quality or reliability. Furthermore, EdgeStream's ability to deliver the same content to mobile devices, personal computers and televisions over one unified platform will enable Sky PerfecTV to meet the challenges of providing services in the emerging multi-device/multi-platform environment", said Vinod Sodhi, CEO of EdgeStream at the press conference in Tokyo today.
Mr. Yamazaki further added "We have been conducting internal reviews of the EdgeStream technology platform with exceptional results for several months now. Our strength in the Japanese media industry combined with EdgeStream's video delivery platform, allows us to expand our relationship with our audience. Utilizing just a handful of geographically dispersed server sites for network resiliency and route diversity, the EdgeStream platform will allow delivery of true TV and DVD quality video on demand streaming to all broadband connected clients in Japan and across the world".
