Motorola announced its commitment to developing WiMAX in Asia Pacific at the Wireless Broadband Week 2005 conference held in Singapore October 18-19.

Motorola's commitment to develop WiMAX in Asia Pacific will be backed by its global drive to provide operators with improved wireless broadband networks through increased R&D, business alignment and industry alliances. Motorola is focusing its efforts on developing WiMAX 802.16e solutions that provide mobility as well as fixed and nomadic access.

FalconStor Software, Inc. announced that its PrimeVault facility has been selected by KyLinTV to manage the storage and hosting of its more than 15,000 hours of broadcast TV and Video on Demand (VOD) programming.

Using Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), KyLinTV brings high quality broadcast channels and hundreds of hours of VOD shows and movies to subscribers with existing home DSL or Cable broadband connections. While VOD and broadcast content from China are archived for subscriber access, KyLinTV is also adding about 1 terabyte of entertainment content per month. As a burgeoning business, KyLinTV 's IT needs center on storage and network availability.

ABI Research examined the nascent market for "Telco TV," and the equipment needed to support advanced video delivery services. At that time, operators were planning quite rapid project deployments, and subscriber number projections were high.

The 2006 "Telco TV Infrastructure and System Integration Opportunities" paints a somewhat less rosy picture. Many projects have suffered delays, and many companies have downgraded their initial estimates of customer numbers and launch dates.

The platform is designed to support digital subscriber line (DSL) services, fiber to the home or premise (FTTx), and WiMAX wireless broadband in a single frame -- based on the Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture (AdvancedTCA®) standard -- helping service providers deliver interactive IP multimedia services over a wide variety of networks, reducing both capital and operational costs.

ECI Telecom introduced its Hi-FOCuS MiniCAB, a unique Outside Plant (OSP) solution that can fully replace a complete street cabinet. The Hi-FOCuS MiniCAB allows broadband deployments at any location, while continuing to deliver voice services, and reducing the installation hurdles and expenses associated with a traditional street cabinet. Even in saturated locations or rural areas, where it was not previously feasible for operators to provide broadband services, this mini street cabinet solution provides subscribers with the necessary broadband bandwidth to cost-effectively support next generation triple play services. The Hi-FOCuS MiniCAB supports ADSL2+ and VDSL2-based capabilities, and is the latest addition to the Hi-FOCuS family of OSP solutions.

The Slingbox is a breakthrough consumer electronics product that enables consumers to watch their living room TV programming from wherever they are by turning virtually any Internet-connected Windows-based laptop or desktop PC into a personal TV. The Slingbox redirects, or "placeshifts," a single live TV stream from a cable box, satellite receiver, or digital video recorder (DVR) to the viewer's PC -- located anywhere in the home or anywhere in the world, via the Internet.

GPON market leader Optical Solutions Inc. has been awarded a contract with Telepak Networks of Jackson, Mississippi, to deploy that state's first FTTH network. Residents of Roxie, approximately 80 miles south of Jackson, will receive a triple-play offering of voice, data and IPTV video starting later this year.

TANDBERG Television delivered revenues of MNOK 476.1 in 3Q05, up 21% compared to MNOK 392.6 in 3Q04 and up 4% sequentially. The gross margin was 56.3%, up from 51.4% in the same quarter in 2004, and up from 55.0% in 2Q05, due to improvements in product mix and solid margins in our traditional technologies. The company delivered operating profits of MNOK 94.7, up 71% from MNOK 55.6 in 3Q04 and up 26% sequentially. Pre-tax profit was MNOK 102.7, up from MNOK 55.5 in the same period in the previous year.
