MyToons.com has inked a deal with video site YouTube to showcase the creative work of thousands of animators on the new MyToons branded YouTube channel. SES AMERICOM sold out its entire available inventory of Ku-band transponder capacity to support news reporting of Super Tuesday presidential primary elections across the United States. Occasional use satellite services allow media companies to purchase capacity on SES AMERICOM satellites to support special events and short-term broadcasting needs.

Over 700 channel hours, representing 14 full transponders of Ku-band transponder capacity, were sold in advance of Super Tuesday. This load is more than ten times what SES AMERICOM books for coverage of a typical news event.

Screen Digest revised its usage data and forecasts on the online TV market in the UK. A surge in usage for the BBC’s iPlayer catch-up service has prompted Screen Digest to revise upwards its forecasts for free-to-view TV consumption in the UK. The change reflects the emerging prominence of the FTV model in driving usage of web-TV services.

Screen Digest reports that 0.8bn free-to-view online TV streams and downloads – including TV shows, sports and niche programming – were initiated by UK broadband households in 2007. This is now expected to rise to 1.5bn in 2008, and forecast to hit 2.8bn by 2012. Screen Digest analysis of comScore consumption data indicates that video streams initiated via the bbc.co.uk domain, including the iPlayer sub-domain, accounted for 38 per cent of total UK FTV streams and downloads in 2007.

Avinity Systems announces support for the H.264 codec to be available for its RenderCastT platform in the second quarter of 2008. The platform offers a novel and disruptive approach to bring on-demand Internet content to digital TV over any network to any existing two-way Set-Top Box.

The RenderCastT platform is already used by several leading cable and IPTV operators and content providers to bring on-line content, rich media navigation and interactive commercials to digital TV platforms based on the MPEG-2 codec. The H.264 codec provides even richer cinematic user interfaces, much lower bitrates, and efficient support for High Definition.

The organisers of the IPTV World Forum are launching a new conference stream to be co-located at the IPTV World Forum, March, 2008, called IP Cable. The event will feature worldwide cable operators, leading industry consultants and the technology providers who are involved in cable migration plans to IP.

ESPN to announce this week that college campuses and military bases, anyone in the .edu or .mil domain will be able to access live programming on its ESPN360 web site free of charge. Opening ESPN360’s doors to college students and members of the military will more than double its possible users base. This move could potentially help drive more traffic to ESPN360 which has recorded only 500,000 viewing hours since it started focusing on live sporting events last September.

Last month, the service showed more than 450 hours of Australian Open tennis as well as 225 college basketball games, cricket matches, international soccer matches and the Winter X Games.

National Geographic Channel is launching a broadband-video Web site with six subdivisions by genre. The ad-supported site is launching with 1,500 clips grouped into "Animals & Nature," "Exploration & Adventure," "History & Events," "People & Places," "Science & Technology" and “Nat Geo Wild”. While most of the video will be clips, each channel will feature a new longer video from 15 minutes to one hour each week. The site will also begin letting users post clips to their own sites or share them via e-mail.

Over the past few years the number of broadband subscribers in China has increased exponentially. According to the Ministry of Information Industry, there are 122 million users towards the end of 2007. But due to a low penetration rate, there is still plenty room for expansion. While this may come as good news to the nation’s telecom operators, growing the business is not without its challenges. Telecom operators not only need to struggle with having to lower costs but also develop enticing services to attract new subscribers and reduce churn. Another major goal is to devise a business model for such services to make a profit and find ways around the existing barriers.
