Over the past six months, the volume of long-form television content available on the Internet has exploded as more and more media companies capitalize on the potential of online distribution. While consumers have benefited tremendously from increased access to and availability of their favorite TV shows, the proliferation and fragmentation of this content across multiple sites present a navigation challenge.

The Worldwide online video revenue is expected to eclipse US$4.5 billion by 2012, up from $1.2 billion in 2008, says In-Stat. Purchased/rented videos are expected to offer the most robust growth for online video in the near term, in large part due to an increase in subscription services such as Netflix, which charges a flat monthly fee to deliver an optimal combination of packaged goods and online content that can be viewed on home TV sets. Ad-supported professional video from major TV networks will become a strong revenue contributor by 2012.

The British Prime Minster's Office will use Brightcove's online video platform to increase the availability of video content through the official government website, http://Number10.gov.uk. As part of this initiative 10 Downing Street will also launch a new website channel, Number10TV, which will provide public access to exclusive video of the Prime Minster's speeches, press conferences, media appearances, and news archives.

Packet Vision and Udcast launch solution for targeted television advertising over mobile TV. The two companies have developed a technology showcase to demonstrate how targeted advertising will be delivered across mobile TV. The first public presentation of their technology will take place at this year's IBC in Amsterdam.

The technology showcase, will include an example of a geographically targeted advertising campaign, showing how content can be delivered to mobile TV users over standard DVB-H networks. The showcase also aims to highlight the symbiotic relationship between mobile TV and targeted advertising: the latter brings revenue to mobile TV, which in turn, provides the targetable platform and customer base which will help to accelerate the growth of addressable television advertising. According to MultiMedia Intelligence mobile video revenue will exceed $3.5 billion in 2008, and grow to $15 billion by 2012.

Sigma Designs' SMP8634LF media processors are being used in I-O DATA’s new, updated set-top box models, the AV-LS500L and AV-LS500UL. The broadcast, cable, and telco TV segments of worldwide video server markets are all growing at a healthy pace, and total revenues are expected to reach $1.5 billion in 2013. Of the three, the telco TV market is showing the strongest growth, with a compound annual growth rate of 28% over 2007-2013. Cable will experience a CAGR of about 13.5%, while broadcast markets show the slowest growth at 8%.

Sling Media released a public beta of their SlingPlayer 2.0 Windows software. The SlingPlayer 2.0 software is free to download and adds several new features to the service. Users will be happy to find a built-in programing guide enabling quick channel search and channel change functionality from your PC with no IR delay. The upgrade also includes a live video buffer with DVR-like control, integrated Sling Accounts, and a slick new interface. What you won't find is Clip+Sling, but Sling insists that it remains in the works. The SlingPlayer 2.0 starts an "important transition process" for its future applications.

Tilgin has won an order of its IPTV technology from the broadband subsidiary of one of the largest and most influential multi-utility companies in Denmark. The order value of this initial order is approx 0.5 million USD. Tilgin will be delivering its High Definition Mood 400 IP set-tops and management software as part of an end-to-end IPTV ecosystem.

The Danish utility has extensively deployed a Fiber-to-the-Home network and will deliver a broad portfolio of next-generation broadband services, including High Definition IPTV. The services will be commercially roll-out directly. The company has more than one hundred thousand residential and business customers, whom they over time will be able to offer High Definition IPTV as they continue to build out its network.

TANDBERG Television is leading role in the delivery of HD and SD television feeds to a potential worldwide audience of 4 billion for the Beijing 2008 Summer Games. Chunghwa Telecom has purchased an additional 450,000 Cypher Virtual SmartCard clients from Widevine to accommodate rapid subscriber expansion and in-home network proliferation with existing subscribers. The NFL will stream 17 prime-time, regular-season games in real time on NFL.com and NBCSports.com, including last weeks season opener between the Washington Redskins and New York Giants.

The league has never streamed games in real time in the United States.
