The IMS Research study IPTV: Beyond Telco TV reveals that an estimated 290 million households had the capability to view Internet video at the end of 2007, of which 28 million had the ability to display Internet video on a TV. By the end of 2013, this 28 million is forecast to grow to 300 million, raising 2013 revenues for related equipment to $32 billion.

The global market for set-top boxes will grow gradually over the next few years, then will peak at around 110 million shipments in 2012, according to a new report from ABI Research. Thereafter STB unit volumes for all platforms – DTT), IPTV, DBS, and CATV – will begin a gradual decline.

STB revenues show a different pattern. According to ABI Research principal analyst Robert Clark, “STB revenues for all platforms have declined significantly between 2007 and 2009, but will recover by 2010 and remain relatively stable through at least 2013.”

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, IPTV Business Case, reveals that the IPTV subscriber base in Asia-Pacific -- covering 13 countries -- reached 4.1 million in 2007 and estimates this to reach 22.4 million by end-2013, at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 32.7 percent (2007-2013).

While threats of financial collapse lurk at every corner, global Telcos apparently did enough belt-tightening back in 2000 to 2003 to lessen their exposure to financial volatility. Multimedia Research Group's latest IPTV Global Forecast shows that global IPTV subscribers will grow from 20.4 million IPTV subscribers in 2008 to 89.6 million in 2012. To drive this growth, IPTV Operators worldwide are expected to continue investing in improved Quality-of-Service, ease-of-operation, HD content, exclusive programming and time-shifting as differentiating features.

IPTV's share of the overall pay TV subscriber base will grow from 3 percent in 2008 to 14 percent in 2013 at the expense of cable TV's share, which will decline from 76 percent to 61 percent over the same period, according to a new Media Forecast service just launched by Pyramid Research.

The Forecast also reveals that, with an increasing number of telcos deploying fiber amidst an increasing need to replace their fixed telephony business, FTTx networks are expected to account for close to 30 percent of IPTV revenues in 2013.

The Nielsen Company's new TV/Internet Convergence Panel, which electronically measures both television and Internet usage in the same homes, has found that television viewing and online video streaming are complementary activities.

According to the convergence panel, the heaviest users of the Internet are also among the heaviest viewers of television: the top fifth of Internet users spend more than 250 minutes per day watching television, compared to 220 minutes of television viewing by people who do not use the Internet at all.

When it comes to viewing TV and video, growth in consumer markets is more limited by consumers’ ability to absorb new usage models and new applications than by limitations of technology, according to a new US consumer survey from ABI Research.

The online survey, which examined avenues of video delivery and consumption, found age influencing several patterns of consumption.

The North American IPTV and switched digital video equipment market declined sharply in 2Q08, pulling the worldwide market down 5% sequentially to $1.27 billion despite healthy increases in EMEA, Asia Pacific, and CALA, reports market research firm Infonetics Research.

The dip in the overall market is due to slowing IPTV and SDV subscriber additions by service providers in some regions hit hard by the uncertain economic climate, particularly in North America, according to Infonetics' report, IPTV and Switched Digital Video Equipment, Services, and Subscribers.

Cable television could see a mass migration away from its services, according to Parks Associates' TV 2.0: The Consumer Perspective, if providers do not improve their consistently low satisfaction ratings among subscribers.

This new report reveals that subscribers to satellite television and telco/IPTV are significantly more likely to be satisfied with their services than both basic and digital cable subscribers. These market conditions leave cable carriers vulnerable to subscriber churn, and the survey recommends they quickly enhance advanced services like VoD to reverse this trend.

As they enter the growth stage of their industry, IPTV operators are moving past their underlying network capabilities and are focusing on real and value-added benefits for their customers. Telco-IPTV operators’ future success will be determined by a wide range of internal and external factors while they manage the expansion stage of their offerings and find their investment needs shifting as they target both existing and prospective customers.

AmberFin releases the results of a research survey conducted at this year's IBC conference in Amsterdam. AmberFin spoke to industry experts attending to gauge their opinion on what issues would most influence the industry in the coming year.

The results clearly demonstrate the use of multiple platforms such as broadband, IPTV and mobile handsets as key drivers for the industry moving forward. However, although most (60%) felt that the industry has improved its knowledge and use of multiple delivery platforms in the last year, it was agreed by 70% of respondents that content owners could still be distributing their content more effectively across multiple platforms.
