Preliminary results from the IMS Research study IPTV: A Global Market Analysis – 2011 Edition, reveal that the IPTV subscriber base in the emerging BRIC markets exceeds 8 million subscribers for 2010, with China dominating the figure. A CAGR of 13% for BRIC is expected through the forecast period, which ends in 2015.

The new IPTV Global Forecast (December 2010) reveals that the number of global IPTV subscribers will grow from 44 million at the end of 2010 to 111.5 million in 2014, a compound annual growth rate of 26%. The forecast shows that Europe will be the regional leader, with 42% of the worldwide IPTV subscribers total in 2014, maintaining its lead mostly because of the sheer number of large Tier-1 Service Providers, and because of continued strong IPTV growth in some countries.

Overall, the service revenue forecast for the global IPTV market is US$17.8 billion in 2010 and is forecasted to grow to US$47.9 billion in 2014, a compound annual growth rate of 28%, a 1% CAGR increase since the last report. By 2014, Europe and North America will generate a larger share of the global revenue, due to very low ARPUs in Asia.

Based on information from 875 IPTV Operators, where the total number of IPTV Operators have increased by 22 since Q2/2010, the rate of growth of global IPTV Operators continues at a rate of over 10 new Operators per quarter, with about 50% of those in North America.

With the unprecedented number of 20 Vendor acquisitions in 2010, the global IPTV industry is poised for even larger growth. Overall, there were 20 key IPTV Vendor acquisitions during 2010. The total value of the 10 reported financial transactions was US$1.95 billion reported. If the other 10 unreported deals were added, the overall value of the transactions would be well over US$2 billion. In 2011 Vendors and Service Providers also are starting to embrace Over-the-Top video services, as well as other forms of online entertainment options in order to provide value to consumers.

Year on year growth rates of 6.7% have taken broadband subscription to 508,761,837 in the third quarter of 2010, according to figures prepared by Point Topic and announced by the Broadband Forum in its Global Broadband and IPTV Industry Update. Over 14.3 million lines were added in the third quarter alone, representing 2.88% growth over the previous quarter.

Whilst the first three quarters of 2010 have generally been characterized by uneven growth patterns, some countries stand out with exceptional growth – with China and India both reporting their second best ever quarters in Q3. Vigorous growth was generally concentrated in developing broadband markets, with India, Russia, Vietnam, Ukraine and the Philippines all growing by more than 20% in the last 12 months.

"Considering that revenue from video services will rival that of voice services by 2014, one of the more interesting trends going on in the residential services market is the number of video subscribers that are jumping from cable to satellite and telco IPTV. In 2010, residential cable video subscriber numbers are flat, while satellite video subscribers have been increasing slowly but surely over the last few years, and telco IPTV subscribers are up 40% from last year. Video services are proving to be a hard fought battle. While cable operators have a legacy in North America, they have been unbending in their pricing policies, and as a result are losing record number of subscribers to less expensive alternatives," notes Diane Myers, Infonetics Research's directing analyst for VoIP and IMS.

A new forecast from MRG projects that global growth of OTT video services will exceed US$1 billion in 2010 and US$20 billion in 2014, based on over 40 OTT Service Operators and Device Vendors profiled.

MPEG-4 AVC set-top box shipments surpassed MPEG-2-only set-top box shipments for the first time in 2010, with about 53% MPEG-4 shipments worldwide. Despite the support for advanced encoding, however, pay-TV operators worldwide have been slow to support interactive features on set-top boxes.

Historically, they have only allowed managed video services, such as video-on-demand, along with a very few token applications such as weather, traffic and sports into their walled gardens. High-end boxes that shipped this year in the US and Europe will enable higher levels of interactivity, including next-generation EPGs (electronic program guides) and hybrid services, with many services slated to launch in early 2011.

For the second quarter in a row, North American digital pay TV operators added fewer subscribers than in the preceding period. Comcast added only 219,000 new digital subs in the third quarter, a sharp decrease from Q2 adds of 394,000. Satellite operator Dish saw its second consecutive quarter of subscriber losses, reporting a decrease of 29,000 for the period.

The extent to which net additional subscriber declines are attributable to economic malaise, seasonality or “cord cutting” is still being debated. However, survey research recently fielded by Strategy Analytics shows that 13% of current US pay TV subscribers intend to drop their pay TV service in the next 12 months—and not replace it with another.
