Cable Companies Try to Prevent Verizon FiOS Rollout

The New York Public Service Commission today rejected a petition from Cablevision and the Cable Telecommunications Association of New York Inc. aimed at frustrating consumer choice for better voice, data and video services.

"This is a victory for New York consumers," said Paul A. Crotty, president of Verizon New York/Connecticut. "The cable-TV industry, led by Cablevision, failed in this transparent attempt to deny New Yorkers faster, better broadband services and the promise of future choice for TV programming."

85 Percent of Respondents in Poll Support Updating Franchising Law

New Jersey residents want choice and competition for cable TV.

In a poll commissioned by Verizon, an overwhelming number of respondents expressed strong support for updating the state's antiquated franchise laws.

Verizon will soon bring to nine communities in the Harrisburg area one of the most significant advancements in telecommunications technology in the past 100 years. The communities are: Hummelstown Borough and Derry, West Hanover, East Hanover, South Hanover, Swatara, Lower Swatara, Lower Paxton and Susquehanna townships.

The City Council last night voted unanimously to award a video franchise to Verizon for its FiOS TV product, to be delivered via its new, all-fiber network.

In awarding the franchise, this city of 23,000 becomes the first in Florida to pave the way for improved competition in the cable television market. It joins Keller, Wylie, Sachse and Westlake, all in Texas, and Beaumont, Calif., as cities that have awarded video franchises to Verizon.

Verizon announced it is rolling out a fiber-optic network - known as fiber to the premises, or FTTP -- to many customers in the communities of Emerson, Haworth, Montvale, Midland Park, Oakland, Paramus, Park Ridge, River Vale, Saddle River, South Hackensack, Upper Saddle River and Waldwick.

Verizon also announced it is deploying FTTP to 19 more communities in five other counties: Denville, Hanover, Harding, Long Hill, Mendham Borough, Parsippany-Troy Hills and Rockaway in Morris County; Bernards in Somerset County; Colts Neck, Fair Haven, Little Silver, Middletown, Red Bank, Rumson, Sea Bright and Shrewsbury Borough in Monmouth County; Hopewell Township in Mercer County; and Cherry Hill and Voorhees in Camden County.

Verizon customers in Closter and Wyckoff now can experience high-speed Internet access as the company begins to offer its Verizon FiOS (FYE'-ose) Internet Service to homes here.

The two Bergen County communities are the first where Verizon's premier consumer broadband services are available in the state. The company is offering three tiers of service with downstream (download) speeds of up to approximately 5, 15 and 30 Mbps (megabits per second).

Verizon announced a programming-distribution agreement with Sí TV, the only English-language Latino network in the United States. Under the agreement, Verizon will carry the channel on Verizon FiOS TV when it launches later this year.

Sí TV will complement other major cable and network channels, including those targeting Hispanic viewers, that will be available to Verizon customers.
