Broadband TV News reported yesterday that BBC's iPlayer will go live on December 25th. The computer-based free catch-up TV service has been in beta since launch back in July 2007.

French broadcaster TV5 Monde has created a global online video-on-demand portal titled VODéothèque. The new platform offers nearly 1000 documentaries and reports in French. Videos can be rented for 48 hours starting at €1 or a permanent download starting at €1.99. TV5 Monde has a temporary offer to watch a documentary for free from their 1000 programs available. The offer is valid from December 3rd thur 10th 2007.

EchoStar is changing their name to DISH Network and will be spinning off some of their businesses, namely their set-top box division that now owns Sling Media, creators of the Slingbox. Read more at GigaOm.

In some older news, Brightcove will be closing doors on the ability for consumers to upload and share personal video clips. Brightcove said it will stop accepting video uploads after December 17.

Verizon is unwrapping high-definition video-on-demand in many of its FiOS TV markets. HD VOD is now available over the FiOS TV systems in Richmond and Virginia Beach, Va.; Tampa, Fla.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; and Pittsburgh. It is coming soon to the FiOS systems in the Washington, D.C., metro area, Massachusetts and Rhode Island; and to Verizon's remaining FiOS TV markets next year.

Verizon last month said it expects to have more than 150 HD channels by the end of 2008 as it continues to add to its HD lineup, and programmers launch new channels. It also said that it would increase its HD VOD titles to more than 1,000 in 2008.

Panama’s CTV Telecom has selects Amino's AmiNET125 multi-codec Set-Top-Box for Central America’s first IPTV service. The AmiNET125 platform is specifically designed to help operators in emerging markets to introduce IPTV services with a flexible and cost effective approach. The AmiNET125 can also be used in European and North American markets for standard definition TV sets.

Cisco talks about its strategy to help service providers in Asia Pacific deliver an end-to-end IPTV solution. The solution, which delivers high quality video with optimal service reliability, will be demonstrated at its booth at the IPTV World Forum Asia 2007. Verizon's FiOS TV service in Florida marks its second year of operation Thursday (Dec 6), with greater services, broader market coverage and an ever-growing base of FiOS double and triple-play customers. When Verizon announced third quarter earnings on Oct. 30, the company reported 717,000 FiOS TV customers and 1.3 million FiOS Internet customers. Verizon also reported that, of the customers across the country who could get each service, 15.2 percent had purchased TV subscriptions and 20 percent had subscribed to FiOS Internet.
