Verimatrix, developer of the most widely deployed IPTV content protection system with tier one operators, today announced that its Verimatrix Content Authority System (VCAS) has been selected by Norilsk-Telecom for the first ever interactive television service for the Siberian region of Russia. Norilsk-Telecom, the telecommunications leader for this region, will offer local and popular international channels, films and interactive services. The project will begin in Norilsk and will ultimately include Norilsk-Telekom's subscriber base to tens of thousands of users.

Akimbo Systems, the first Internet video-on-demand service for television, today announced that it has closed a Series C investment round of $15.5 million. New investors Cisco Systems Inc., the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, AT&T Inc., one of the world’s largest telecommunications holding companies, and venture capital firm, Blueprint Ventures, join existing Akimbo investors Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Sprout Group and Zone Ventures.

While broadcasting the 2006 FIFA World Cup live and online, BBC Sport will also have live broadband streaming for one of the world's greatest tennis tournaments, the 2006 Wimbledon Championships starting on Monday, June, 26.

The live streaming will be available to UK broadband users and viewers will see the same coverage as BBC's live terrestrial viewing along with digital interactive feeds, latest scores and results service. Three-minute highlight packages rounding up each day's play will be available to a global audience. The service is available from BBC Sport's dedicated Wimbledon website.

Sling Media, Inc. announced that its award-winning Slingbox will soon be available for purchase across Japan. Sling Media is working with two partners to deliver Slingbox to the Japanese market: Itochu Corporation and I-O Data Device, Inc. Itochu Corporation will serve as Sling Media's exclusive distribution partner in Japan and I-O Data will market and sell the Slingbox through their retail locations across the country. The Slingbox will be available July 8th throughout I-O Data's online and retail locations and will cost 29,800 Yen (recommended retail price). The companies jointly made the announcement at a press event in Tokyo on Friday.

As you may or may not have heard, there is a big TV licence shakedown taking place in the UK. Since the BBC has been broadcasting the FIFA World Cup online, the TV Licensing Authority (TVLA) in the UK has said users who watch at work need to purchase a licence if the business does not have one. According to the TVLA, if a business purchases a licence, all the TV equipment the business owns will be covered. That would include PCs.

AT&T has a new privacy policy that will go into effect today. The changes are raising eyebrows because of some new context. AT&T writes that they can access customer confidential information "to protect its legitimate business interests, safeguard others, or respond to legal process." The new policy also includes provisions for the monitoring of viewing habits of its U-verse IPTV service customers.

Privacy advocates and consumer groups are not pleased with the changes. They claim that AT&T is making personal information a business asset.

AT&T has slated to spend $336 million in the next three years to bring its U-Verse IPTV service to Connecticut. That, however, could change.

On June 7th, the state Department of Public Utility Control (DPUC) voted 3-2 that IPTV is not subject to traditional cable franchising regulations.

cVidya Networks announced the availability of a solution for IPTV services based upon its flagship product, MoneyMap/Suite. This makes cVidya the first vendor to provide a revenue assurance solution for IPTV. The solution covers both active and proactive aspects of revenue assurance, making it particularly important at the IPTV service deployment stage. cVidya's solution was recently validated as the revenue assurance component of the IPTV Catalyst project presented by the TeleManagement Forum in Nice.

Agilent Technologies Inc. verified that its N2X multiservices test solution validated the performance of IPTV service delivery over the largest multilayer GMPLS/MPLS test network ever constructed. The multivendor interoperability test was conducted at Isocore Internetworking Lab and will be showcased this week at the iPOP 2006 public demonstration.

Music VOD service i-concerts, and France’s broadband ISP operator Free have finalised a strategic 2-part partnership deal, to launch one of the first ever TV channels via ADSL to offer around the clock High Definition concerts and create the largest European IPTV VOD concert platforms.

Integrated Media Holdings announced today that its subsidiary, Endavo Media and Communications, Inc. has partnered with Latin-focused digital media company Ahora LLC to launch the first interactive service that delivers Latin music videos to registered users over broadband in full-screen, DVD quality to PC's, TV's, and mobile devices. The companies, which first announced the venture last December, have officially unveiled this Latin music video destination called Ahora Musica. The new service will offer music videos by top artists from countries throughout Latin America, as well as worldwide Latin music producers. Ahora Musica will primarily serve the rapidly growing, US-based Latin population, of which approximately 16.7 million are online and most with broadband connection. Ahora Musica will be free to registered users, supported primarily by targeted and interactive advertising.
