UTStarcom has won a contract from Sri Lanka Telecom to supply set-top boxes for the telecom operator's IPTV system expansion. UTStarcom's set-top boxes, which are part of the Company's RollingStream end-to-end IPTV solution, will enable SLT to provide a number of interactive media services, including Live HDTV, Time Shift TV and Video-on-Demand, to its customers.

"This contract is our second big win in the Sri Lankan market in the last eight months," said UTStarcom's President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Jack Lu. IPTV subscriptions worldwide will grow at 70% from 2012 to 2017 with 100% growth in the Asia-Pacific off a large base of 28.5 million subscribers. Global pay-TV subscribers will reach 853.5 million at the end of 2012, with 116 million IPTV subscribers

Worldwide, cable operators are investing heavily in the digitization of their networks to compete with satellite and IPTV platforms. “Satellite and IPTV networks have been able to deliver better channel selection and higher quality signals than analog TV platforms. UTStarcom announces it has been awarded a contract from Hainan Network Television to build an integrated IPTV broadcasting control platform. Hainan is the second among 42 recently designated trial markets to award an IPTV solutions contract to UTStarcom. The new broadcasting control platform will support the content management and distribution needs of IPTV, Internet TV and mobile TV.

Chongqing, one of the largest municipalities in China, is the first of the 42 new trial cities to award a contract to an IPTV solution provider. The new broadcasting control platform can support the content management and distribution needs of IPTV, Internet TV and mobile TV.

Since 2010, UTStarcom has built nine IPTV broadcast control platforms across China, specifically in Beijing, Hubei, Hunan, Shandong, Shenzhen, Sichuan, Tianjin, Zhejiang and now Chongqing.

The Company will deliver a packaged solution that includes software and infrastructure development, content delivery network support, and IPTV, Internet TV and mobile TV integration support.

Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan’s largest telecom operator, has chosen Ericsson to deploy and integrate a new IPTV platform that will deliver multi-screen interactive multimedia services to more than 900,000 subscribers. The new platform will replace Chunghwa’s existing IPTV system and respond to a growing demand from consumers for content anywhere, any time on a wide range of devices including TVs, computers, smartphones and tablets.

The Chunghwa Telecom deal also includes Ericsson Multiscreen TV and the Ericsson Media Connect (IPTV Remote) service. The new services are due to be available to subscribers in December of this year.

Canal+ Overseas has begun a migration to Thomson Video technology for its digital headend serving Indian Ocean territories. The newly equipped platform, located in Boulogne, France, near Paris, will be rolled out by November 2011, transmitting 90 SD and HD channels, all encoded in MPEG-4 format.

Canal+ Overseas is replacing its existing infrastructure with a combination of Thomson Video Networks products, including ViBE EM2002 dual-channel SD encoders, ViBE EM3000 HD encoders, and NetProcessor 9030 multiplexers. In 2012, Canal+ will upgrade to Thomson's new ViBE EM4000 multichannel HD encoder.
